US Port Workers and Operators Reach Agreement, Averting Second Strike

Late Wednesday, East and Gulf Coast port operators reached a tentative agreement with a dockworkers’ union, CBS News reported (1-8-25).

The International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance announced in a joint statement that they had reached a tentative deal on a new six-year contract, beating a January 15 deadline that threatened to halt shipments for a second time in three months.

Background

In early October, tens of thousands of dockworkers along the East and Gulf coasts went on strike after the parties failed to reach a new master contract before the expiration of the previous six-year agreement.

The strike lasted three days and ended with a tentative deal that included a wage hike and an extension of the contract until January 15 to negotiate the outstanding issues.
