Canadian Pacific Railway and Kansas City Southern Railroad Formally Complete Their Combination

The Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) and the Kansas City Southern Railroad (KCS) formally completed their combination on Friday (4-14-23). This follows formal approval from the US Surface Transportation board a month ago. The new railroad will go by “CPKC.”

CP closed on its $31 billion acquisition of the KCS in December 2021, winning a bidding war over rival Canadian National Railway.

In a statement released Friday morning, CPKC President and Chief Executive Officer Keith Creel said:

“Today, we celebrate this historic combination creating a truly unique single-line rail network that begins a new chapter of railroad history in North America. As we mark this once-in-a-lifetime occasion by driving the final spike in Kansas City, Missouri, where CP and KCS come together we stand ready to bring new competition into the North American rail industry at a time when our supply chains have never needed it more.”
