BC Dockworkers Ratify New Labor Agreement

The Canadian Press is reporting (8-5-23) that members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada (ILCW) have voted in favor of accepting a tentative agreement with the BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA), bringing five plus weeks of turmoil on the BC docks to a negotiated conclusion. ILCW President Rob Ashton said 74.66 percent of the membership voted in favor of the new pact.

According to The Canadian Press, a statement released by the BCMEA said that it has ratified the four-year deal, which “includes increases in wages, benefits, and training that recognizes the skills and efforts of BC’s waterfront workforce.”

In a tweet, Federal Labor Minister Seamus O’Regan confirmed that both parties have accepted the terms of the new agreement, ending the dispute. O’Regan also said that he is directing federal officials to review the entire case to avoid a port disruption of this magnitude from happening in the future.
