Weyerhaeuser Explores 7–10 Sites for Wood-to-Biocarbon Facilities

Weyerhaeuser told investors in late August that it is “exploring 7–10 sites” for facilities that would convert wood into biocarbon, a coal substitute used in steelmaking, Harborwright reported (9-29-26).

Weyerhaeuser and Aymium formed TerraForge Biocarbon Solutions in December 2025. The joint venture is expected to produce 1.5 million tons of biocarbon annually at full scale.

Weyerhaeuser’s presentation identified potential co-locations at company sawmills and greenfield sites near its timberlands. The company owns 6.6 million acres of Southern timberland, including holdings in North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina, and operates Southern mills in Greenville and Plymouth, North Carolina.

The first TerraForge facility is planned beside Weyerhaeuser’s lumber mill in McComb, Mississippi, with startup expected in 2027. The project is located at the Metro-Pike Industrial Complex in nearby Magnolia, in Pike County.

The site strategy centers on access to fiber within trucking distance. The Mississippi project is located in an existing county industrial park, illustrating that future sites could include rural industrial locations near Weyerhaeuser mills and timberlands.
