Large West Virginia Hardwood Sawmill Operator Closes All Facilities Without Warning

West Virigina-based Allegheny Wood Products closed all of its facilities on February 23rd without warning, WCHS-TV reported on Monday.

Allegheny Wood Products is a large hardwood sawmill employer with operations located in Cowen, Kingwood, Riverton, Bruceton Mills, Princeton, Petersburg, and Moorefield, West Virginia. All facilities were largely idle by Monday.

According to WCHS-TV, employees say they knew the company was having difficulties, but anticipated that it would be sold. Counties did not get any warning, even though notices are required in large layoffs.

State officials estimate the move led to 850 job losses, which includes contractors who conducted business with Allegheny.
