Interfor Idles Gogama, ON, Sawmill for Two Weeks
Interfor shuts down Gogama sawmill for two weeks
Interfor has temporarily shut down its Gogama, Ontario, sawmill for two weeks, adding to a series of production slowdowns at its Ontario operations, Sudbury.com reported (10-27-25). The mill, located about 190 kilometers north of Sudbury, is expected to partially resume operations on November 3.
Jacques Jean, president of United Steelworkers Local 1-2010, said roughly 50 of the mill’s 60 employees are laid off, with a small number retained for maintenance and equipment work. When production resumes, the mill will operate with one shift instead of two, leaving about 25 employees without immediate recall.
The BC-based lumber producer cited “temporary adjustments to its lumber production plans for the fourth quarter of 2025 in response to ongoing market challenges.” The company has not been issuing separate announcements for each mill curtailment.
On October 17, Interfor said it would reduce lumber output by 26% across its facilities in British Columbia, Ontario, the US Pacific Northwest, and the US South following new US tariffs. A 10% tariff imposed in mid-October came on top of the existing 35% duty on Canadian softwood lumber.
Interfor said it will continue to monitor market conditions and adjust operations as needed.
