Fire Significantly Damages Control Room at Canfor’s Houston, BC, Sawmill Facility

The Terrace Standard, a local newspaper in Terrace, BC, is reporting that an early morning fire on Sunday (1-22-23) at Canfor’s Houston Sawmill facility has severely damaged an interior control room.

As a result, the full reopening of the mill, which has been closed during the prior five weeks, will be further delayed. The mill’s planer operation resumed on scheduled on Monday (1-23-23) and will continue to process rough lumber inventory that has been stockpiled on the site.

Michelle Ward, a spokesperson for Canfor, said, “We are undertaking an investigation to determine what happened. We are also assessing the impacts of the damage and determining the availability of the necessary replacement equipment. At this point it is too early to know when we’ll be able to resume operations at the sawmill.”
