EACOM Timber’s Timmins Sawmill Fire Will Not Lead to Layoffs at the Facility

A fire at EACOM Timber sawmill in Timmins, Ontario on Monday (2-14-22) caused roof damage to the facility, but it was not severe enough to force a curtailment at the operation. Employees returned to the site on Wednesday (2-16-22) after being off on Monday and Tuesday for safety reasons.

Jean Brodeur, EACOM Timber’s director of communications, confirmed that the planer department was the affected area, but overall, the mill or the CDK (continuous dry kiln) wasn’t severely impacted by the fire.

“The fire was basically in the roof,” Brodeur said. “A big part of the planer was not damaged; a big part of the machinery was not touched by the fire. But obviously damage from the water, we have to evaluate. It’s a block of ice now. But the firefighters didn’t have any choice. The No. 1 issue was dealing with the fire.”

Brodeur added that “There were no injuries. There were no employees there when the fire started actually.”

“What can be saved, and how long would it take for us to be able to restart?” That process might take a few weeks, but in the meantime, he confirmed there will be no employee layoffs.
