Russia Increases Lumber Exports to Japan
According to Japan’s latest import statistics, nearly 14% of the sawn timber imported in 2024 came from Russia, Maaseudun Tulevaisuus reported (6-17-25). Exports of Russian sawn timber to Japan rose 13% compared to the previous year.
As a result, the value of Finnish wood product exports to Japan has declined from nearly EUR 600 million in 2022 to approximately EUR 300 million per year in 2023–24.
The Finnish Sawmills Association and the European Organization of the Sawmill Industry (EOS) are now calling for Japan to include Russian wood products in its sanctions regime.
The sawmill industry is Finland’s largest export sector to Japan. Wood products—including sawn timber, planed sawn timber, and glulam—make up roughly 30% of Finland’s total goods exports to the country.
