MEDITE SMARTPLY Invests €75 Million in Ireland MDF Manufacturing Facility

MEDITE SMARTPLY announced a €75 million (US$86.3 million) investment program at its MDF manufacturing facility in Clonmel, Ireland, supporting the next phase of production as the company marks 50 years of the MEDITE brand.

The company said the investment reinforces its long-term commitment to panel manufacturing in Ireland and is intended to strengthen supply resilience for customers across the Irish, UK, and European construction and interiors markets.

The project includes the replacement and renewal of the site’s biomass boiler system, along with upgrades to fuel handling, dryer systems, and other supporting infrastructure. MEDITE SMARTPLY said the improvements will enhance plant reliability, improve process control, reduce downtime, and help ensure consistent product quality across continuous production lines.

The investment is also expected to support long-term employment at the Clonmel facility and sustain a network of local and regional suppliers connected to the site. In addition, the new system will eliminate natural gas use by transitioning fully to renewable biomass as the primary heat source, reducing fossil fuel-related CO2 emissions and supporting the company’s Scope 1 emissions reduction goals.

Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Clonmel plant produces approximately 400,000 m3 of MDF products annually and serves customers across Europe. The project has secured planning consent through Ireland’s Strategic Infrastructure Development process and includes measures related to environmental protection, waste management, water supply, and ecological monitoring.
