California Forms Mass Timber Coalition to Advance Forest Health and Construction Markets
California Launches First Statewide Mass Timber Coalition
On Thursday, California announced the formation of the California Mass Timber Coalition, a new public-private partnership designed to accelerate mass timber construction, support forest health and wildfire mitigation, and promote economic development across rural and urban communities.
The coalition brings together state and federal agencies, county and local governments, research institutions, industry representatives, forest sector organizations, nonprofit organizations, and community partners. Its work will focus on supporting an in-state mass timber industry and advancing climate-smart construction.
The coalition will also work to establish state policies and regulations that support in-state mass timber utilization, manufacturing, industry development, and market growth.
Mass timber products—including CLT, dowel-laminated timber (DLT), and nail-laminated timber (NLT)—offer a lower-carbon alternative to traditional construction materials. California said the materials can help reduce carbon emissions, support forest restoration, and create jobs in local manufacturing and construction.
Commenting on the coalition, Terry O’Brien, Chair of the Board of Forestry and Fire Protection, said:
“The establishment of the California Mass Timber Coalition marks a significant step forward in our efforts to advance sustainable building practices while improving the health of California’s forests and landscapes. This collaborative approach will help California leverage innovation, reduce wildfire risks, and support economic opportunities for communities throughout the State.”
