34-Story Hybrid Timber Tower Approved in Perth, Australia

Officials have approved plans for a 34-story hybrid timber skyscraper in Perth, Australia, WoodCentral reported (6-20-25). The A$200 million build-to-rent project will become one of the tallest buildings in the world constructed using a significant amount of wood.

The City of Perth’s Metro Inner Development Panel signed off on the project from Western Australian developer Erben. The tower will include 351 apartments—65 of them for short-term stays—and 180 car parks, all within the city’s “free transit zone.”

Designed by Urbis, the building will feature a hybrid structure of steel and cross-laminated timber, supported by a concrete core. The design team says this mix reduces the project’s carbon footprint, improves structural performance, and brings natural warmth to the interiors.
