Value of Canadian Building Permits Rises in December

On Wednesday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that the total value of building permits issued in Canada increased 6.8% in December 2025 to CA$12.8 billion, an increase of $821.3 million from November. On a constant dollar basis (2023=100), the total value increased 6.6% but was down 6.3% year-over-year.
Both the industrial and commercial sectors recorded their second consecutive monthly decrease, with six provinces and two territories posting declines.
Residential Construction
Residential construction intentions rose $533.5 million to $8.0 billion in December.
The multifamily component increased $653.2 million to $5.5 billion, with six provinces and two territories contributing to the gain.
The single-family component declined $119.7 million to $2.5 billion. Six provinces and one territory contributed to the decrease.
Nonresidential Construction
The value of nonresidential building permits increased $287.8 million to $4.8 billion in December.
Institutional construction rose $412.6 million. Commercial construction declined $71.1 million, and the industrial component fell $53.8 million.
