Value of Canadian Building Permits Rise in January

On Thursday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that the total value of building permits issued in Canada rose 4.8% in January to CA$13.3 billion, an increase of $607.0 million from December. On a constant dollar basis (2023=100), the total value rose 4.3% month-over-month and was up 0.8% year-over-year.

Residential Construction

Residential construction intentions rose $143.0 million to $8.0 billion in January.

The single-family component rose $222.3 million to $2.5 billion, while multifamily construction intentions fell $79.3 million to $5.3 billion.

Across Canada, 21,400 multifamily and 4,000 single-family dwellings were authorized in January, a 1.8% decrease from the previous month. From February 2025 through January, a total of 256,500 multifamily dwellings were authorized, up from 241,800 during the previous 12-month period.

Nonresidential Construction

The value of nonresidential building permits rose 9.4% to $5.4 billion in January. Institutional construction investment increased $235.7 million.

Commercial construction intentions fell $128.5 million to $2.2 billion, while the industrial component rose $356.8 million to $1.2 billion—marking the largest month-over-month gain since July 2024.
