US Weekly Jobless Claims Increase in the Week Ending January 27th

The US Department of Labor reported on Thursday (2-1-24) that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 224,000 during the week ending Saturday, January 27th. This is an increase of 9,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 215,000 (originally reported as 214,000). The 4-week moving average was 207,750—an increase of 5,250 from the previous week’s revised average of 202,500 (originally reported as 202,500).

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment, known as continuing claims, during the week ending January 20th was 1,898,000. This is an increase of 70,000 from the previous week’s revised total of 1,828,000 (originally reported as 1,833,000). The 4-week moving average was 1,841,250—an increase of 7,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 1,833,750 (originally reported as 1,835,000).

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.3% for the week ending January 20th, an increase of 0.1% from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
