US Weekly Jobless Claims Increase in the Week Ending January 20th

On Thursday (1-25-24), the US Department of Labor reported that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 214,000 during the week ending Saturday, January 20th. This is an increase of 25,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 189,000 (originally reported as 187,000). The 4-week moving average was 202,250—a decrease of 1,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 203,750 (originally reported as 203,250).

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment, known as continuing claims, during the week ending January 13th was 1,833,000. This is an increase of 27,000 from the previous week’s unrevised total of 1,806,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,835,000—a decrease of 13,250 from the previous week’s revised average of 1,848,250 (originally reported as 1,848,000).

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2% for the week ending January 13th, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
