US Weekly Initial Jobless Claims Increase in the Week Ending January 11

On Thursday, the US Department of Labor reported that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 217,000 during the week ending Saturday, January 11. This is an increase of 14,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 203,000 (originally 201,000). The 4-week moving average was 212,750—a decrease of 750 from the previous week’s revised average of 213,500 (originally 213,000).

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending January 4 was 1,859,000. This is a decrease of 18,000 from the previous week’s revised total of 1,877,000 (originally 1,867,000). The 4-week moving average was 1,866,750—a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week’s revised average of 1,868,000 (originally 1,865,500).

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2% for the week ending January 4, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
