US Job Cuts Fall in June; Lowest Monthly Total Since December
According to the Challenger, Gray & Christmas (CG&C) Job Cut Announcement Report released on Wednesday, US-based employers announced 45,849 job cuts in June, a 53% decrease from May’s 97,006 cuts. June’s total was the lowest monthly level since December 2025. Year-over-year, announced cuts were down 4% from 47,999 in June 2025.
So far this year, companies have announced 443,604 job cuts, down 40% from the 744,308 cuts announced through the first half of 2025. This is the second-highest January-to-June total since 2020, trailing only last year’s government-driven surge.
Employers announced 226,242 job cuts in Q2, up 4% from 217,362 in Q1 but down 9% from 247,256 in 2025Q2.
CG&C noted that job cuts in June were widespread, with significant reductions in technology, services, food production and manufacturing, health care, transportation, and media.
Technology again led all sectors, announcing 15,503 job cuts in June for a total of 139,156 in 2026. Transportation has announced the second-most cuts among all industries this year, at 40,970.
Hiring Plans
Employers announced plans to add 10,933 jobs in June, down 44% from 19,536 in May but above the 3,191 announced in June 2025.
CG&C reported that so far this year, employers plan to add 91,405 jobs, up 10% from the 82,932 announced through the first half of 2025.
