Investment in Canadian Building Construction Declines in October

On Tuesday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that total investment in building construction declined 0.5% to CA$22.3 billion in October. Year-over-year, investment rose 5.7%.

On a constant dollar basis (2023=100), total investment fell 0.6% to $20.6 billion in October but was up 2.3% from a year earlier.

Residential Construction

Residential investment decreased $125.8 million to $15.5 billion in October. Single-family construction fell 2.5%, while the multi-unit component posted a modest 0.6% increase.

Investment in single-family home construction declined $180.1 million to $7.0 billion. Multi-unit construction investment rose $54.4 million to $8.5 billion.

Nonresidential Construction

Nonresidential investment amounted to $6.8 billion in October, up $15.5 million. Institutional investment was $2.1 billion, up 0.3%. Commercial investment was $3.4 billion, up 0.3%. Industrial investment was $1.3 billion, down 0.1%.
