Investment in Canadian Building Construction Edges Higher in August

On Monday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that total investment in building construction increased 0.1% to CA$22.8 billion in August. Compared with August 2024, total investment was up 8.7%.

On a constant dollar basis (2023=100), investment edged down 0.1% to $21.2 billion but was up 5.0% year-over-year.

Residential Investment

Residential building construction investment rose $10.5 million to $16.0 billion in August, driven by single-family home construction. The single-family component increased 2.8% to $7.4 billion, while multi-unit investment declined 2.2% to $8.7 billion.

Gains were recorded in seven provinces and two territories, led by Ontario (up $65.4 million), New Brunswick (up $28.0 million), and Saskatchewan (up $27.8 million).

Nonresidential Investment

Nonresidential investment increased $22.9 million to $6.8 billion in August.

The commercial and institutional components each grew 0.8%, while industrial investment fell 1.4%. Commercial investment rose $25.3 million to $3.3 billion, led by Ontario (up $26.9 million). Institutional investment increased $16.7 million to $2.1 billion, driven by Alberta (up $15.1 million). The industrial component declined $19.0 million to $1.3 billion.
