CPKC Reaches Tentative Long-Term Labor Agreements With Two Unions

On Friday, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) announced it has reached tentative collective bargaining agreements with the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers – Transportation Division (SMART-TD) and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET).

The agreements consolidate 11 existing contracts across the company’s US network into two long-term hourly agreements. SMART-TD covers conductors, brakemen, and other train service employees, while BLET represents locomotive engineers and other train and engine workers.

The agreements run from 2025 through 2034 and cover roughly 1,700 train and engine service employees across 11 states, including Illinois, Texas, and Louisiana. The deals aim to streamline labor structures and align with CPKC’s integrated North American network.

If ratified, the agreements—along with a previously ratified Soo Line BLET contract—would conclude negotiations for about 81% of CPKC’s US train and engine workforce. The Soo Line agreement, ratified in December, is not set to reopen until 2029.
