Canadian Rail Traffic Edges Higher in November
Railway carloadings, November 2025
On Monday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that the volume of cargo carried by Canadian railways rose 0.5% year-over-year in November 2025 to 31.4 million tons.
StatCan said higher intermodal shipments—primarily containers—along with increased wheat carloadings largely drove the gain during the month.
Overall freight volume in November was roughly in line with the five-year average of 31.5 million tons for the month.
The year-over-year increase reflected higher volumes of both non-intermodal loadings, mainly commodities, and intermodal traffic, which offset another decline in freight originating from US rail connections.
Loadings from connections with American railways fell 11.0% year-over-year to 3.0 million tons, marking the 10th consecutive monthly decline and the lowest November volume in five years.
