US Announces 50% Tariffs on Broad Range of Canadian Goods

On Monday, President Donald Trump signed three proclamations imposing additional 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports over what the White House described as discriminatory treatment of US products.

The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on Wednesday, August 19 and cover products including wood panels (excluding OSB), paper, furniture, wine, hockey sticks, cement, and dairy products. The White House said the three proclamations address Canadian policies affecting US motor vehicles, dairy products, and alcohol.

The duties will be imposed under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 and will apply to covered goods regardless of whether they are covered under USMCA. Energy products, potash, certain fish and critical minerals, and products already subject to Section 232 tariffs—including lumber—will be excluded.
