US National Interagency Fire Center Wildfire Update for August 29

The US National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported that as of Friday, August 29, 48 large fires are actively burning across the country, with 1 new fire reported in the last day.

The National Fire Preparedness Level remains at 4 out of 5. Nearly 18,300 wildland firefighters and support personnel remain assigned nationwide.

As of Friday, there are 48 large wildfires or emergency responses ongoing. Only one is partially contained.

Montana leads with 11 active fires; Idaho has 8; California has 7; Colorado and Utah have 5 each; Arizona and Wyoming have 3 each; Oregon and Washington have 2 each; and Nevada and Texas have one each.

The updated year-to-date comparison is as follows:

  • Year-to-date through August 29, 46,122 wildfires have been reported, burning 4,118,620 acres.
  • During the same period last year, 28,373 wildfires were reported, burning 6,336,634 acres.
  • The 10-year average (2015–24) for the same period is 40,513 wildfires and 5,267,194 acres burned.
