US Domestic Wood Pellet Sales Decline in 2024, but Exports Increase

US manufacturers produced 10.71 million metric tons of wood pellets in 2024, a Biomass Magazine review (4-21-25) of data released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows. That production included 1.55 million metric tons of premium/standard pellets and 9.16 million metric tons of utility pellets.

Total pellet production in 2024 was approximately 1% lower than in 2023, a decrease of 115,842 metric tons. Premium and standard pellets dropped 16%, losing 295,299 metric tons, while utility‑grade output grew 2%, adding 179,457 metric tons.

Domestic sales amounted to 1.54 million metric tons at an average price of $227.61 per ton—down 14% (247,372 metric tons) from 2023. The average price per ton was up about $0.05.

Exports totaled 8.87 million metric tons at $195.37 per ton, up 3% (288,463 metric tons) from 2023. The average price per metric ton was up about $0.04.
