Scierie St-Michel Sawmill in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, QC, Suspends Operations

Scierie St-Michel will temporarily suspend operations at its sawmill in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Quebec, beginning Monday, August 4, Radio-Canada reported (8-2-25).

The company said new tariffs imposed by the US represent an insurmountable obstacle. Scierie St-Michel exports more than 60% of its wood products to the US.

CEO Jean-François Champoux said the sawmill will halt operations on August 4, while the planer is scheduled to suspend activity on August 18.

More than 250 employees will be temporarily laid off until October 13, when operations are expected to resume. Champoux expressed hope that a trade agreement between Canada and the US will be reached by then.
