Mercer International Ends Its Celgar Pulp Mill Curtailment Early

The Nelson Star reported on Friday (8-18-23) that the temporary curtailment at Mercer International’s Celgar pulp mill located near Castlegar, BC, will be ending one week early. The curtailment was originally scheduled to last from July 29th to August 28th.

Mercer reiterated that the curtailment was due to a significant loss of rail transport capacity resulting from the Vancouver port job action that began on July 1st, according to the report. The labor action, now settled, is allowing the mill to schedule start-up on Monday, August 21st. The process is anticipated to take approximately one week.

In a statement to the Nelson Star, Mercer International said, “Every effort will be taken to minimize impact on the surrounding areas and any odor experienced will be temporary. Your understanding and patience are appreciated, and Mercer Celgar apologizes for any inconvenience.”
