Domtar Open to Selling Maniwaki, QC, Sawmill
Owner of Maniwaki, Que., sawmill open to selling it
Domtar is open to selling its sawmill in Maniwaki, Quebec, according to a meeting on Tuesday with employees and elected officials, Radio-Canada reported (5-14-26). The company later confirmed the information to the broadcaster.
The sawmill has been temporarily closing and reopening since the end of 2024. Domtar acquired the facility as part of its 2023 purchase of Resolute Forest Products. When announcing a closure in September 2025, Domtar cited difficult market conditions and US softwood lumber duties.
“We don’t see recovery in the short, medium, or long term. We think the best scenario would be to find a local owner,” Guillaume Julien, Domtar’s Eastern Canadian senior director of public affairs, said.
Part of the reason the sawmill would reopen was around its agreement with the province to purchase wood.
