Sunshine Coast Airport to Become Australia’s First Mass Timber Terminal
Australia’s Sunshine Coast Airport has reached a new milestone in its AU$170 million (US$119 million) Terminal Redevelopment Project, with installation underway on approximately 30 tons of engineered timber, Airport World reported (10-19-26).
Once completed, the project will become Australia’s first mass timber airport terminal.
The engineered timber is being installed to form the terminal’s raking roof frames, a defining architectural feature designed by Populous: Fentress Studios’ Australian team in partnership with builder McNab. The exposed timber is intended to reflect the region’s subtropical landscape while creating a calming environment for passengers.
Sunshine Coast Airport General Manager for Projects and Planning Robin Mace said, “The timber frames will become one of the most recognizable features of our new terminal, and watching them go in is an exciting sign of the progress being made on this investment in our region’s future.”
Populous: Fentress Studios Associate Principal and Architect Sean Powyer added, “Timber was a natural choice for the terminal, reflecting the surrounding subtropical rainforest and reinforcing the building’s connection to the landscape it sits within.”
