Fonds De Solidarité FTQ Breaks Ground on Mass Timber Rental Building in Québec

Fonds de solidarité FTQ announced it has broken ground on a 12-story mass timber rental residential building in Terrebonne, Québec.

Led by the Fonds immobilier de solidarité FTQ and supported financially by the Government of Québec through its Wood Construction Innovation Program under the 2030 Plan for a Green Economy, the project will deliver 164 rental units. The first units are expected to be completed in spring 2028.

The development will be the first in North America to use Québec-developed Upbrella technology, a covered construction system designed to improve site safety and protect materials from weather exposure. Project partners include Provencher_Roy, Genimac, Elema, JCB Construction Canada, Développement immobilier CT, Dyotte Déom Paysage, and MJM Conseillers en acoustique, with technical support from Cecobois.

Built using mass timber, the project is targeting Zero Carbon Building certification from the Canada Green Building Council. The design focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy performance, and incorporating material reuse. Timber will be supplied by Nordic Structures’ Chantiers Chibougamau manufacturing facility.

In remarks accompanying the announcement, Fonds de solidarité FTQ President and CEO Janie C. Béïque said (translated):
