Construction of Six-Story Mass Timber Student Housing Project at University of Fraser Valley’s Abbotsford, BC, Campus to Get Underway

Turner Construction Co. and Clark Builders have been appointed by University of Fraser Valley to build a 398-bed student housing community on its Abbotsford, BC, Canada campus. Originally announced in May 2022, the $73.7 million (CAD) project will triple the campus’ number of beds. It is part of a $82.3 million expansion that also incorporates the construction of a dining hall and the addition of an extra floor to the Cascade Café, an on-campus food service.

Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2023, and occupancy is expected to be ready for the start of the fall 2024 semester. Upon completion, the six-story, mass-timber facility will incorporate a study, lounges, shared kitchens, as well as mixed-use cultural space. To be delivered through the Integrated Project Delivery method, the project is also slated to include sustainable features in order to meet the Passive House Building Certification standards.
