Africa’s First FSC-Certified Timber Stadium Opens in Lesotho

Designed and built by nonprofit Rise International, The Stadium of Life in Maseru, Lesotho, has become the first stadium in Africa constructed using sustainably sourced timber, Global Construction Review reported (5-13-26).

The stadium was built at the Kick4Life Centre, a social enterprise hub established in 2011 following the 2010 FIFA World Cup in neighboring South Africa.

The project received certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Construction used FSC-certified timber and 8,584 treated eucalyptus poles sourced from plantations in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

The neighboring Theatre of Life outdoor amphitheater was also completed as part of the project and is intended to serve as a cultural and educational venue. In addition, a “Biodiversity Stand” has been installed to showcase flora from across Lesotho’s 10 districts.
