US Weekly Jobless Claims Fell in the Week Ending December 31st

The US Department of Labor is reporting that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 204,000 during the week ending on Saturday, December 31, 2022. This is decrease of 19,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 223,000 (originally reported as 225,000). The 4-week moving average was 213,750—a decrease of 6,750 from the previously week’s revised level of 220,500 (originally reported as 221,000).

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment, known as continuing claims, during the week ending December 24, 2022, was 1,694,000. This is a decrease of 24,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,718,000 (originally reported as 1,710,000). The 4-week moving average was 1,687,500—an increase of 6,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,681,500 (originally reported as 1,679,500).

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2% for the week ending December 24, 2022, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
