US Weekly Jobless Claims Decrease

The US Department of Labor is reporting that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 190,000 during the week ending on Saturday, January 14, 2023. This is a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 205,000. The 4-week moving average was 206,000—a decrease of 6,500 from the previously week’s unrevised level of 212,500.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment, known as continuing claims, during the week ending January 7, 2023, was 1,647,000. This is an increase of 17,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,630,000 (originally reported as 1,634,000). The 4-week moving average was 1,673,000—a decrease of 5,500 from the previous week’s revised level of 1,678,500 (originally reported as 1,679,500).

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.1% for the week ending January 7, 2023, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
