US Construction Job Openings Increase Modestly in April

On Tuesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released its Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) for April, with analysis from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), showing that construction job openings increased to 259,000 from 234,000 in March. Year-over-year, job openings were up from 207,000 in April 2025.

The construction job openings rate rose to 3.0% in April, compared with 2.4% a year earlier.

NAHB noted that the construction job openings series has generally trended lower and then stabilized since the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates and home building activity weakened. While residential construction employment declined during the second half of 2025, growth in other segments of the industry, including data center construction, has helped support labor demand and contributed to volatility within a narrower range for job openings since 2024.

The construction layoff rate edged down to 1.5% in April. Meanwhile, the quits rate was unchanged at 1.7%.
