State-Level Construction Employment Data for May

A closer look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) May nonfarm payroll report, with analysis by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), shows that construction sector employment—including both residential and nonresidential—rose in 23 states and DC in May. Meanwhile, 22 states reported losses, and five states saw no change.

Overall, the construction industry added a net 17,000 jobs in May. Texas posted the largest gain, adding 3,600 construction jobs, while Massachusetts recorded the largest loss, shedding 4,200. On a percentage basis, Idaho led with a 2.6% increase, while Montana experienced the steepest decline at 4.9%.

Compared to a year ago, US construction employment rose by 68,000 jobs, a 0.8% increase. Texas saw the largest year-over-year gain, adding 18,700 jobs, while California posted the largest loss, down 13,100. Wisconsin led all states in percentage growth, with construction employment rising 6.2%, while New Mexico had the sharpest percentage decline at 3.1%.
