Canadian Industrial Product and Raw Materials Price Indices Rise in August

On Thursday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) released the Industrial Product and Raw Materials Price Indices for August.

Industrial Product Price Index

The Industrial Product Price Index (IPPI) rose 1.3% in August and was up 13.5% year-over-year.

The monthly increase was mainly driven by energy and petroleum products, which rose 4.0% following a 6.2% increase in July. Refined petroleum energy products increased 4.6%—led by diesel fuel, up 9.6%, and light fuel oils, up 8.5%.

The August increase marked the 23rd consecutive month of year-over-year growth in the IPPI.

Raw Materials Price Index

The Raw Materials Price Index (RMPI) rose 3.1% in August. Excluding crude energy products, the index increased 1.1%.

Crude energy products were the main contributor to the monthly increase, followed by metal ores, concentrates, and scrap. Lower prices for animals and animal products partially offset the gain.

Year-over-year, the RMPI increased 22.8% in August, following an 18.2% increase in July. Excluding crude energy products, the index was up 17.2% from a year earlier.
