On Friday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that Canadian employment fell by 42,000 jobs, or 0.2%, in August. The decrease followed a cumulative increase of 181,000 jobs, or 0.9%, from April through July.
Year-over-year, employment was up 217,000 positions, or 1.0%.
The unemployment rate held steady at 6.4% in August, following three consecutive monthly declines in May, June, and July totaling 0.5 percentage points.
