On Monday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that Canadian railways moved 31.3 million tons of freight in September, down 0.7% from September 2024. Total volume for the month was in line with the five-year average of 31.2 million tons.
Stronger carloadings of wheat and other cereal grains helped offset a sharp decline in freight traffic originating in the US. Cross-border tonnage fell 26.7% year-over-year to 2.9 million tons, marking the lowest September level in nearly a decade and the eighth consecutive monthly decline.
Year-to-date through September, railways transported 280.7 million tons of cargo, roughly 0.1% below the same period in 2024.
