A Georgia-Pacific spokesperson is confirming that a fire in the plywood portion of their Newberry South Carolina facility, reported just before midnight on Monday (6-28-21) was relatively minor and that internal systems helped to suppress the flames before they could spread. Crews from several departments responded and were on the scene for hours Tuesday morning extinguishing flames and monitoring for flare-ups at a local wood products plant. The fire wasn’t considered fully under control until 3:00 AM Tuesday morning. The spokesperson said that production shouldn’t be significantly impacted – if at all. He said no injuries were reported. At this point, authorities believe the cause of the fire was a short in the wiring.
