Georgia-Pacific to Permanently Close Its Memphis, TN, Cellulose Mill

On Thursday, Georgia-Pacific announced plans to permanently close its Memphis Cellulose mill and the adjacent Memphis Technology and Innovation Center in Tennessee, citing challenging market conditions for the facility’s products.

The decision affects about 130 employees at the cellulose mill and 22 at the technology and innovation center. Most positions are expected to be eliminated by early December. The company said its priority in the coming weeks is to continue safe operations while supporting employees during the transition.

Georgia-Pacific said the decision was made in the best interest of the GP Cellulose business and was not a reflection on the Memphis team’s quality of work. The company explored all options, including a potential sale, and plans to leave the mill and facilities in sellable condition should a buyer emerge.

Memphis Cellulose is a cotton linter mill and does not consume wood fiber.
