Georgia-Pacific Announces the Pending Closure of Its Foley Cellulose Mill in Perry, Florida

Georgia-Pacific (GP) announced on Monday (9-18-23) that it intends to permanently close its Foley Cellulose mill in Perry, Florida. Production will continue for a limited time as the site works to fulfill as many customer commitments as possible. Approximately 525 jobs at the mill will be impacted.

Citing various factors impacting its decision, the company said it ultimately does not believe that the mill can competitively serve its customers in the long term despite the significant investments and commitment by GP Cellulose since the site was acquired in 2013.

The press release noted that this is strategic decision made prior to Hurricane Idalia and is not a reflection of the hard work and effort made by the Foley team. GP’s focus in the coming weeks and months is to continue to operate safely while supporting employees during the transition.
