Value of Canadian Building Permits Falls in July

On Wednesday, Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported that the total value of building permits issued in Canada fell 17.3% in July to CA$12.2 billion, a decrease of $2.6 billion from June.
On a constant dollar basis (2023=100), the total value fell 17.5% and was 2.2% lower year-over-year.
Residential Construction
Residential construction intentions fell $701.2 million to $7.2 billion in July. The multi-family component declined $531.8 million to $4.7 billion, accounting for most of the decrease, while single-family construction intentions fell $169.4 million to $2.5 billion.
Across Canada, 19,200 multifamily and 4,100 single-family dwellings were authorized in July, a 10.1% decrease from the previous month. From August 2025 to July 2026, 297,100 multi-unit dwellings were authorized, down from 308,200 in the previous 12-month period.
Nonresidential Construction
The value of nonresidential building permits fell $1.9 billion to $5.0 billion in July.
The institutional component declined $1.5 billion to $1.7 billion, while the industrial component fell $443.3 million to $795.5 million. The commercial component increased $41.0 million to $2.5 billion.
