US Weekly Jobless Claims Increase in the Week Ending March 30th

On Thursday, the US Department of Labor reported that the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 221,000 during the week ending Saturday, March 30th. This is an increase of 9,000 from last week’s revised level of 212,000 (originally 210,000). The 4-week moving average was 214,250—an increase of 2,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 211,500 (originally 211,000).
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment, known as continuing claims, during the week ending March 23rd was 1,791,000. This is a decrease of 19,000 from the previous week’s revised total of 1,810,000 (originally 1,819,000). The 4-week moving average was 1,799,750—a decrease of 750 from the previous week’s revised average of 1,800,500 (originally 1,802,750).
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2% for the week ending March 23rd, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate.
