US Pending Home Sales Rise in March

On Tuesday, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) reported that its Pending Home Sales Index (PHSI)—based on signed contracts for existing single-family homes, condominiums, and co-ops—rose 1.5% in March. Year-over-year, pending sales were down 1.1%.

An index of 100 corresponds to the level of contract activity in 2001.

The regional breakdown is as follows:

  • The Northeast PHSI rose 4.4% month-over-month but fell 6.5% year-over-year.
  • The Midwest index fell 1.3% month-over-month and was down 3.1% year-over-year.
  • The South PHSI rose 3.9% month-over-month and increased 2.3% year-over-year.
  • The West index fell 2.6% month-over-month and declined 1.7% year-over-year.
