US Job Openings and Labor Turnover Summary for July

On Tuesday, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the number of job openings was little changed in July at 7.3 million, with the job openings rate at 4.4%.

The number of hires was little changed at 5.1 million, representing a 3.2% rate. Total separations were little changed at 5.1 million, or 3.2%. Within separations, quits were little changed at 3.1 million, or 1.9%; layoffs and discharges were little changed at 1.7 million, or 1.0%; and other separations were essentially unchanged at 350,000.

By establishment size, the layoffs and discharges rate decreased for businesses with 1–9 employees, while job openings, hires, quits, and total separations rates showed little or no change. For establishments with 5,000 or more employees, the hires rate decreased, while job openings, quits, layoffs and discharges, and total separations rates showed little or no change.

Monthly Revisions

Revisions result from additional reports received since the last published estimates and from the recalculation of seasonal factors.

Revisions to June estimates show job openings were revised down by 177,000 to 7.2 million. Hires were revised down by 16,000 to 5.3 million, while total separations were revised down by 14,000 to 5.3 million. Within separations, quits were revised down by 19,000 to 3.2 million, and layoffs and discharges were revised up by 19,000 to 1.8 million.
