US Construction Spending Slips in July

On Tuesday, the US Census Bureau reported that total construction spending in July was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of $2,157.6 billion, down 0.5% from the revised June estimate of $2,167.7 billion. Compared to July 2025, spending was down 3.8% from $2,242.6 billion.

For the first seven months of the year, construction spending totaled $1,244.6 billion—3.5% lower than the $1,289.7 billion spent during the same period in 2025.

Private Construction

Private construction spending was at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1,614.2 billion in July, down 0.5% from the revised June total of $1,622.9 billion.

Residential construction fell 1.3% to $859.0 billion, down from $870.6 billion in June. Nonresidential construction increased 0.4% to $755.2 billion, compared to $752.4 billion in June.

Public Construction

Public construction spending was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $543.4 billion in July, down 0.2% from the revised June figure of $544.7 billion.

Educational construction fell 0.2% to $112.3 billion, while highway construction declined 0.2% to $150.3 billion.
