US Construction Job Openings Increase in September

A closer look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) September Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), with analysis by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), shows that construction job openings increased to 298,000 in September, up from 262,000 in August and 206,000 a year earlier.

The construction job openings rate increased to 3.4% in September, up from 2.4% a year ago. The hiring rate rose to 4.3%, compared with 4.1% in September 2025.

The construction layoff rate was 1.6% in September, while the quits rate increased to 2.4%. Total quits reached 198,000, compared with 127,000 a year earlier.

Construction job openings remain below levels recorded three years ago, reflecting declines in construction activity, particularly in housing. However, demand for workers in subsectors such as data center construction remains strong, NAHB said.
