A closer look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) March nonfarm payroll report, with analysis by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), shows that construction sector employment—including both residential and nonresidential—rose in 31 states and the District of Columbia in March. Meanwhile, 14 states reported job losses, and five states saw no change.
Overall, the construction industry added a net 26,000 jobs in March. Ohio posted the largest gain, adding 5,300 construction jobs, while Nevada recorded the largest loss, shedding 2,600. On a percentage basis, Delaware led with a 4.2% increase, while Nevada experienced the steepest decline at 2.3%.
Compared to a year ago, US construction employment rose by 57,000 jobs, a 0.7% increase. Texas saw the largest year-over-year gain, adding 21,600 jobs, while California posted the largest loss, down 9,400. Missouri led all states in percentage growth, with construction employment rising 5.2%, while Alaska had the sharpest percentage decline at 6.5%.
