State-Level Construction Employment Data for June

A closer look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) June nonfarm payroll report, with analysis by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), shows that construction sector employment—including both residential and nonresidential—rose in 28 states and the District of Columbia in June. Meanwhile, 20 states reported job losses, and two states saw no change.

Overall, the construction industry added a net 11,000 jobs in June. Texas posted the largest gain, adding 5,200 construction jobs, while California recorded the largest loss, shedding 4,100. On a percentage basis, New Mexico led with a 3.2% increase, while Montana experienced the steepest decline at 1.6%.

Compared with a year ago, US construction employment rose by 64,000 jobs, a 0.8% increase. Texas recorded the largest year-over-year gain, adding 24,800 jobs, while California posted the largest loss, down 15,400. Louisiana led all states in percentage growth, with construction employment rising 7.7%, while New Hampshire had the sharpest percentage decline at 2.5%.
